The Heavenly Stem Transform & Combine is one of the elementary Bazi study and practice is to know how to combine the Heavenly Stem and what does it mean.

Heavenly Stem | Heavenly Stem | Elements | ||
---|---|---|---|---|
甲 Jia Yang Wood | '+ | 己 Ji Yin Earth | '= | 土 Tu Earth |
乙 Yi Yin Wood | '+ | 庚 Geng Yang Metal | '= | 金 Jin Metal |
丙 Bing Yang Fire | '+ | 辛 Xin Yin Metal | '= | 水 Shui Water |
丁 Ding Yin Fire | '+ | 壬 Ren Yang Water | '= | 木 Mu Wood |
戊 Wu Yang Earth | '+ | 癸 Gui Yin Water | '= | 火 Huo Fire |
Relationships between elements are the foundation of all BaZi readings; this is where the past and future manifest. All reading is governed by a set of elemental relationships. We will first examine the combination of five sets of stems. This is referred to as the evident combination because it is found on the stem. It will be helpful too if you know the relationship of the 5 Elements.
Jia (甲) Yang Wood + Ji (己) Yin Earth = Earth (土)
Earth which is generous and kind. Since both Jia (甲) Wood and Ji (己) Earth are the element of altruism, their combination is immensely beneficial. A tree will never deny shade to anyone, nor does it produce oxygen exclusively for one species. However, if you plant something, it will also care for it at its own expense.
Yi (乙) YIN Wood + Geng (庚) Yang Metal = Metal (金)
Metal that is devoted and selfless. Yi (乙) Wood is the master of combining elements (tactful), while Geng (庚) Metal is the ruler of action. The addition of a timber handle to an axe will make it complete and functional.
Bing (丙) Yang Fire + Xin (辛) Yang Metal = Water (水)
The straying and betrayal of water. Bing (丙) is passion, whereas Xin (辛) is attractiveness, excessive indulgence in women, wine, and music. The Chinese proverb see money (Xin) become water. Fire is an antidote to metal; the fire from the sun, the Bing (丙) Fire will now literally liquefy the Xin (辛) Metal. In exchange for the transmutation, Wisdom (Water) is produced. You will learn an expensive lesson!
Ding (丁) Yang Fire + Ren (壬) Yang Water = wood (木)
The wood that is loyalty. Ding (丁) means guidance, while Ren (壬) means wisdom. The combination of the right guiding principle and the right knowledge will produce a straightforward, easy-to-follow path, resulting in profound loyalty. If you are encircled by ice/water (Ren) and there is a fire pit (Ding), you will be extremely loyal to the fire pit.
Wu (戊) Yang Earth + Gui (癸) Yin Water = Fire (火)
A fire that is rapid and explosive. Wu (戊) Earth is the element of stability, while Gui (癸) Water is the element of constant change; when rapid movement and stability coexist, perplexity ensues. Impacting (rapid movement Gui) two pieces of rock (stationary Wu) produces flame. This relationship is short-lived, but its impact is profound; recall your early days of puppy love or maybe love at first sight.
This is the first and only set of relationships involving the stem; all subsequent relationships involve the branch (12 zodiac animal sign).
Extra notes & analysis
If you know the Heavenly Stem Transform & Combine does not mean the final analysis. Please take note that there are special Heavenly Stem & Branch Combination, 10 Years Luck Pillar and also Yearly Combination Analysis that need to be taken into account as well.
